When Should You Intervene in Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a problem many people face, including friends and neighbors. While it is horrid to be a witness to someone else’s bad situation, it often happens that witnesses to the abuse are the only individuals with the strength and ability to intervene. When should you intervene, and what should you do?
A Time To Intervene
These are times when it is appropriate to seek legal intervention in someone else’s domestic issues.
- A Child is noticeably battered – Friends and neighbors are often the only people who have the opportunity to see families without the cover of lies and manipulation abusers present to people of authority. Being able to present a witness to Child Protective Services can often make the difference between overlooked abuse and children put in a safe place.
- When a friend is afraid for their life – If you have a friend who is afraid for their life, or yours, in relations to their family member, you should seek competent legal counsel, as well as file reports with the appropriate law enforcement agency.
- When violence escalates to the point it affects your quality of life – Many people know the sounds of a domestic dispute, raging into the early hours of the morning. You do not have to be a secondary victim to a violent situation – calling law enforcement and seeking legal counsel are both legitimate response to this situation, it is called disturbing the peace.
- If you are a victim of domestic violence – You do not have to put up with violence, threatened or actual, against you. You have the right to be secure in your person. No one has the right to act violently against you.
